Old Town of Calpe

Old Town of Calpe

Walls, steep streets, painted staircases, and a blend of history and color that stays with you.

You may arrive in Calpe by sea or through the Peñón, but if you want to truly understand what this land was, you need to go up a little and venture into its Old Town. Here there is no beach noise, only stone, history, and walls that still tell stories.

This settlement was born to defend itself from pirates. In the 15th century, Ottoman raids forced people to abandon the coast and build walls in the higher areas. You can still see part of that defense in the Forat de la Mar, right in the Plaza de la Constitución. An arch between houses that marks the beginning of the route.

From there, it’s best to let yourself go:

  • Visit the Torreó de la Peça, an old defensive tower that now houses the Museum of Collecting.

  • Walk down Calle Puchalt, famous for its stairs painted with the colors of the flag.

  • Head towards Calle Mayor, with its shops, its mosaic of everyday scenes, and murals that tell you about Calpe without the need for a guide.

If you want to immerse yourself in history...

  • Archaeological Museum (Casa de la Senyoreta)

Bronze Age remains, Islamic artifacts, ancient tools... Small but intense.

Location: Calle Santísimo Cristo

  • Collecting Museum

Inside the fortress. Public works, private collections, and objects that seem straight out of someone’s attic with very good taste.

Check the opening hours before you go, as they change according to the season.

For those seeking a hidden gem

Visit the Hermitage of San Salvador. From the 17th century, in a Gothic style reconstructed with care and without ostentation. It’s not on the most touristy routes, which is why it’s worth a visit.

When evening falls…

Stroll along Calle Gabriel Miró. Here the atmosphere changes: full terraces, restaurants with tables outdoors, artisan markets that appear in summer at sunset, and that typical Mediterranean night murmur.
