Discover the viewpoint of Morro de Toix
Mountains, coast, and pure air for you.
Among the municipal areas of Calpe and Altea, there is a corner worth a leisurely visit: the Morro de Toix viewpoint. This place offers unforgettable views of the Mediterranean, but it also tells us something about the geological and natural aspect of the region. We are going to tell you how to get to this natural space and some practical tips to enjoy this mini route to the fullest, which we recommend doing at sunset or sunrise if possible.
Where is the Morro de Toix viewpoint?
The Morro de Toix viewpoint is located in a high and steep area east of the Sierra de Toix, right on the border between Calpe and Altea. This natural setting is perched on a stunning cliff that plunges directly into the Mediterranean. Its privileged location makes it one of the most recommended viewpoints for photography lovers, hikers, and those seeking tranquility. In fact, it was our first recommendation about the viewpoints of Calpe.
To reach the start of the route by car, head towards the Maryvilla urbanization in Calpe. From there, a forest track ascends to the trailhead. The access is easy, although in high season it’s advisable to arrive early, as there is no designated parking area and space is limited.
How to do the route to the viewpoint
The route to the Morro de Toix viewpoint is ideal for middle-aged people looking for a low to medium difficulty walk, with great visual rewards. It can be completed in just over an hour (round trip), although it’s easy to stop several times to enjoy the views or take pictures.
From the higher part of Maryvilla, access an unpaved track that ascends gently but steadily. The trail is marked, though not officially, so it’s advisable to carry a hiking app or GPS if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
During the journey, you pass through areas of pine forest and Mediterranean shrubland, with aromas of rosemary and thyme filling the air. As you gain height, the sea opens up to your right, and views of the Ifach Penisula begin to emerge.
The path becomes a somewhat more rocky but safe track. The final point is a large natural clearing, offering an impressive panoramic view.
What can you see from the Morro de Toix viewpoint?
From the viewpoint, you can contemplate one of the broadest and most spectacular landscapes of the Costa Blanca. At our feet, the deep blue Mediterranean Sea stretches out. To the north, the Peñón de Ifach appears majestic. To the south, you can clearly see the silhouette of Old Town of Altea, its church with a blue dome, and the mountains of the Sierra Helada.
On clear days, Ibiza Island can even be seen on the horizon. But beyond the visual, what is felt is a profound peace. The song of seabirds, the sound of the wind among the pines, and the sensation of being at a border point between land and sea make it an emotional experience.
What is nearby?
Just a few minutes drive from Maryvilla, we find another natural and geological treasure: the Mascarat Canyon. This impressive gorge carved into the rock connects the regions of Marina Alta and Marina Baixa, and has been a key crossing point for centuries.
Today, the canyon offers hiking routes and climbing routes for all levels. It’s an ideal complement to the visit to Morro de Toix, as both share the same wild and rugged natural environment. We recommend walking the Mascarat Bridge or exploring the old trail that winds between the gorges, but keep in mind that this would be a more demanding route, not just a viewpoint visit, so you’ll need to be well equipped.
Tips to enjoy the viewpoint
1. Footwear: It’s not a technical route, but as mentioned, the terrain can have loose or rocky sections, so try to wear non-slip footwear.
2. Ideal timing: Avoid the hottest hours of the day, especially in summer. We recommend visiting early in the morning or at sunset, when the light is softer and temperatures are more pleasant.
3. Water and sun protection: There are no water sources or shade at the viewpoint. Bring water, a hat, and sun protection, especially if traveling with children or elderly people.
4. Camera or binoculars: If you enjoy birdwatching or capturing panoramas, this is the ideal place. It’s easy to spot kestrels, seagulls, and even a wild goat.
5. Respect for the environment: This is a natural space without supervision. Please do not leave rubbish, do not light fires, and stay on marked paths.
The Morro de Toix viewpoint is a perfect visit to disconnect in nature without straying too far from the tourist centers of the Costa Blanca and without major hiking routes.
