Whatever you choose, in this post we tell you everything about the Peñón dIfach so you can plan your visit and learn all about this rock formation in advance, it’s one of the things to see in Calpe that you simply cannot miss!
The Peñón de Ifach, a truly unique natural park!
The Peñón dIfach is one of the most unique resources in the Valencian Community, and in the Mediterranean! It is a large mass of limestone rock connected to the peninsula by a narrow strip of land. Experts agree that many years ago, the Peñón might have been an island. Additionally, the Peñón is the final part of the Betic mountain range and home to many species, especially birds, with up to 80 species living at some point during the year on the Peñón! Among these are gulls, hawks, shearwaters, and cormorants. They share their space with quite a unique fauna, such as the Silene dIfach, a perennial plant with a very particular violet flower that only grows in Ibiza, Marina Alta, and yes, the Peñón de Calpe. For years it was believed extinct, but gradually it has been recovering.
Furthermore, the Peñón dIfach is also an archaeological site with the remains of an ancient medieval settlement known as la Pobla dIfach.
Due to its uniqueness, the Peñón of Calpe has been a natural park since 1987 and not only that, it has the honor of being one of the smallest natural parks in Europe, with just 50 hectares, and at the same time, one of the most visited! A must-see during your vacations on the Costa Blanca.

Route to the Peñón dIfach
The route to the summit of the Peñón dIfach is of moderate difficulty, somewhat high in some sections. The first part, up to the interpretation center, is relatively easy and suitable for the whole family with good footwear. Climbing to the top requires an additional level of effort.
First section, to the interpretation center of the Peñón dIfach
Our route starts at the visitor parking lot of the Peñón dIfach, located at the end of the street that shares its name. Although it is well signposted throughout the town, the way to get there is via Calpe Port.
From the parking lot, you just need to start climbing along the forest track. Along the way, you’ll get views of the port and the beaches of La Fossa and Levante. Pausing to take some photos is the perfect excuse to catch your breath. Gradually, you will reach the Interpretation Center of the Park, where a turnstile controls access to keep track of visitors. At the Visitor Center, you'll find information about the flora and fauna of the Park— a good opportunity to learn a lot about the terrain!
Second section, to the tunnel of the Peñón
At this point, the path becomes narrower and a bit more difficult. Carefully, we will reach a tunnel excavated in the rock. The tunnel was drilled with dynamite by one of the owners of the Peñón, as you read. Yes, at the end of the 19th century, the Peñón was put up for auction because, from an administrative perspective, having a space with hardly any flat land and mainly rocky surface was of little use. Both the tunnel and its access are , so whether we are wearing inappropriate footwear, are poorly equipped, or are with children or elderly people, it might be time to take a few pictures and turn back. We guarantee that from this point, the views are already spectacular.
Third section, to the top!
Now it’s time to be extra careful; the path becomes dangerous at certain points due to its narrowness and slippery ground. We must continue ascending until reaching an intersection where a sign will indicate either the way up to the summit or a detour to a lookout called Carabineros. It’s a good idea to stop and enjoy the views. Once finished, we will retrace our steps to the sign, and from there, continue ascending. This is the most challenging part, but once at the top, you will only have to enjoy the incredible views! On sunny days, it’s even possible to see the islands of Formentera and Ibiza, and also the Cape of Santa Pola.

When to visit the Peñón de Ifach
The weather on the Costa Blanca is always great, with temperatures rarely falling below 10°C. However, in summer, with the intense heat combined with physical effort, climbing to the top of the Peñón during the hottest hours of the day can be inadvisable. That’s why, if you are visiting Calpe in summer or staying in an apartment or villa in Calpe, we recommend taking advantage of the early morning or late evening to climb to the top, when the heat is less intense.
During the rest of the year, with mild temperatures and almost 360 days of sunshine, you won't have any trouble enjoying the Peñón dIfach in all its splendor.
