The old town of Benissa has its roots in the Muslim population. It originated as an agricultural centre run by a clan. This clan was known as the Banu-Isa and was identified with the road that today forms the streets of Mossèn Gaspar Tello, Puríssima and Santa Anna. In the 13th century, the army of the Crown of Aragon, led by King James I, arrived in the area and began the process of colonisation of these lands.
As you can see, Benissa is a place full of history, which is still palpable today in its historic centre. Not being by the sea, it is unknown to many. It is a day of relaxation and tourism, perfect to enjoy with the family. The tranquillity and beauty of the Costa Blanca will accompany you through its streets.
You can start your visit at the church of the Puríssima Xiqueta. It is known in the area as "La Catedral de la Marina", as it is one of the largest churches in the area. Its construction began at the beginning of the 20th century and its height is approximately 35 metres. Characterised by its neo-Gothic style, it is an obligatory stop that will take your breath away.
The Sala del Consell (Council Hall) awaits you on the famous Carrer de la Purísima. This 16th-century building used to house the Lonja de Contratación and the sessions of the city council. Located in the centre of the city, it was also used as a place for storing and selling various cereals.
Another point of interest is the monument to the Riberer. Who was he? The Riberer is a figure with a long tradition in the streets of Benissa. Its origins go back several centuries. Many inhabitants went to the rice fields of La Ribera, in the province of Valencia, to cover more needs.
Would you like to know more? There are two traditional houses in the municipality that still have a façade worth appreciating. One of them is the Casa del Batlle, just opposite the Sala del Consell, and today it is the Bernat Capó municipal library and a contemporary art space run by the artist Salvador Soria. The other is the majestic Casa Abargues in Desamparats street.
