Escape to Fuente la Mata from Benissa
On the Costa Blanca, there are still hidden corners that preserve their essence, away from the hustle and perfect for a peaceful getaway. You have already seen that hiking trails in Benissa have much to offer, and today we want to tell you about a very special corner: Fuente La Mata. The Font de la Mata, located in Gata de Gorgos (Alicante), surprises both for its landscape and botanical value and for the rich history it encloses, so we couldn't pass up the opportunity to tell you about it.
What is Fuente La Mata and why is it so special?
Fuente La Mata is not just any fountain. It is a natural spring active since Muslim times, surrounded by vegetation that has endured the passage of time. The place takes its name from a unique shrub: a mata charneca or llentiscle (Pistacia lentiscus) that has grown remarkably among the rocks.
This specimen has been the subject of studies and admiration for its adaptation and growth, which adds great botanical value to the area. But, moreover, Fuente La Mata is a space of silence, freshness, and connection with nature, perfect for reuniting with oneself.
Circular route from Benissa: hiking with Mediterranean essence
The experience begins at the Benissa cemetery, an accessible point with easy parking. From there, we follow an agricultural and paved path that runs parallel to the A7 motorway. This initial stretch, although not particularly visually attractive, serves as a warm-up for what comes next.
We will pass through two tunnels under the highway, until the asphalt gives way to a dirt track. It is important to pay attention to the signs because, after a descending curve to the right, we leave the main track and cross a dried stream. Here begins the most adventurous part: a zigzag ascent through the mountain culminating in a steep, paved section. Take your time; everyone goes at their own pace.
Once this effort is overcome, we come to a crossroad and some ruins. It is here where, just 100 meters to the left, the jewel is located: Fuente La Mata. A cool, shaded spot, perfect for a break, hydrating, and admiring the landscape.
Back through nature: towards Serrellars and views of Montgó
The return is not a simple backtrack. We go back to the crossroads at the ruins and continue along a trail that enters the forest. Mediterranean vegetation surrounds us: pines, bushes, and old agricultural fields accompany us for nearly 2 km.
We arrive at a new signage indicating Tossal del Moro. At this point, we leave that detour and take the trail to the left that ascends to the Serrellars, a hill 432 meters high. This is the most demanding part of the route, especially on hot days, as the path offers no shade. Yes, great views, but be sure to wear a cap.
However, upon reaching the top, the reward is unbeatable: panoramic views that include Gata de Gorgos, the Jávea valley, the Jávea bay, and the majestic Montgó. A visual spectacle that invites contemplation and photography.
The descent follows a trail that takes us to more ruins, where we resume the descent towards Benissa. Soon we connect with the Camí de Canor, a paved track that is unmistakable. All that remains is to follow to the Camí de la Teulera de Canor, turn right, and soon we will return to the starting point: the cemetery.
Tips for enjoying the route
Although visiting Fuente de la Mata is a moderate level, it is important to keep some aspects in mind:
- Avoid the peak hours during summer.
- Bring plenty of water and some food.
- Hiking shoes or trainers with good support; there is paved path, but also rocky terrain.
- Sun protection, cap, and sunglasses.
- And of course, a camera or mobile with battery to capture the views.
- Although there are signs, it’s advisable to carry a GPS or downloaded route to avoid confusion, especially at the mentioned crossroads.
The entire route is almost 13 kilometers long, with challenging sections like the ascent to Serrellers. Overall, it can be completed in about 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on your pace and the time spent enjoying the landscapes or resting at key points such as the spring or viewpoints. It is not a technical route, but it is advisable to be in reasonable physical shape to enjoy it safely.
Are you wondering if it is suitable for children? It depends on their age and hiking experience. The ascent to Serrellers can be demanding for the little ones, but it can be shortened to adapt the route.
