What is the Cave of the Fish?

The Cave of the Fish, or Cova del Moraig, is a natural formation located in the municipality of Benitatxell, in the province of Alicante. It is a space surrounded by rock and filled with water, formed by the fall of a slab from the cliff at the Moraig Fault, creating a deep, narrow, and difficult-to-access space, which is why it was not very well known until now.

Where is the Cave of the Fish?

The Cova del Moraig is named so because it is right next to Cala del Moraig. Next to this small cove, besides the cave, you'll find another easier-to-access one, the Cueva de los Arcos, which has wide openings and is accessed from the sea. Just behind this, the rock reopens to form an opening to the Cave of the Fish, but this time with very small dimensions. The best option if you don't have a boat is to go to Cala del Moraig and start your journey from there to the opening of the Cova del Moraig.

How do you access the cave?

As you can probably guess, access to this hidden spot is only possible from the sea, so it’s recommended to do so by kayak or paddle surfboard, with the latter being the best option.

We suggest this option because the best time to access is when the sea is calmer, as access is through a small opening in the rock, and it’s always better to have something to hold onto if you get tired of swimming. You will need to lie on the board to enter the cave. Once inside, you will find yourself in a scene straight out of a movie.

What is the Cave of the Fish like in Benitatxell?

The cave is surrounded by rock, open to the sky, and inside you will find a pool of crystal-clear waters. The peculiarity of this water-filled space is that... it’s very cold! And the reason is that right here flows a spring, so the water that arrives is fresh and very cold.

Furthermore, the freshwater mixes with the salty sea water, so on calm days, if you bring snorkeling goggles, you can see a \"blurred water\" effect caused by the mixture of spring water and the sea salinity.

Snorkeling is highly recommended in this space, so consider getting goggles before going. This way, you can enjoy the marine life and fauna of this spot, as the water is very clear. Just remember it’s cold, so you might need a wetsuit depending on how tolerant you are to low temperatures.

Inside the cave itself, you will also find a rocky platform to climb onto, but keep in mind it’s sharp and slippery, so it’s not advisable to do so without proper footwear, like good water shoes.
