Moros y Cristianos of Moraira

Moros y Cristianos of Moraira

June. Music in the streets, fireworks in the air, and a celebration that blends history, spectacle, and local pride.

In Moraira, when June arrives, everything changes. The sea is still there, the terraces remain crowded, but something can be felt in the air. It’s gunpowder, yes. But also excitement, eye-catching costumes, and an energy that only has one name: Moros y Cristianos.

Although this celebration is relatively young (starting in 1990), it has already become part of the town’s soul. Every year, in the second or third week of June, the streets are filled with color, history, and music. And yes, it’s obvious that everyone here experiences it, from the longtime neighbor to those visiting for the first time.

The protagonists of all this are the “filades,” groups of friends (and friends, because in Moraira the celebration has been mixed from the very beginning) representing the two historic sides: Moors and Christians. Each “filà” has its own name, costume, shield, and way of celebrating.

Key moments

  • Thursday: Presentation of Banderines

Each “filà” displays their colors, captains, and ambassadors in a gala that kicks off the festivities.

  • Friday Night: Moorish Conquest

At Playa de l’Ampolla, the Moors arrive by sea and take over the town in a performance with fire, drums, and many emotions.

  • Saturday: Christian Reconquest

On the same stage, the Christians regain control in a new theatrical battle. That night, there is live music, street parties, and an atmosphere that lasts until the body can take it.

  • Sunday: Gala Parade

All the “filades” parade through the town center in their best costumes. An explosion of color, rhythm, and pride.
