Discover the Moraira Castle
The stories of pirates, conquests, castles, sieges, and warriors often sound like fictional tales that even George R.R. Martin would sign. But the truth is that (dragons aside) they are part of our own history, and learning about them can help you experience a fantasy holiday. Historical constructions like the Castillo de Moraira help us relive these events and better understand the historical legacy of the most beautiful corners of our country.
Where is the Castillo de Moraira located?
The Castillo de Moraira stands right on the coast, specifically on la playa de l’Ampolla, one of the most well-known beaches in the municipality. This location is no coincidence; from there, you can observe the entire bay, allowing you to control the shoreline and serve as a defense against possible attacks coming from the sea.
Today, its proximity to the urban area of Moraira makes it accessible by walking from the center, making it an excellent starting point for cultural walks along the sea.
What is it and why was it built?
The Castillo de Moraira is not a complete castle but a peculiar defensive battery, with a plan shaped like a "yoke". It’s not a conventional medieval castle but a military construction from the 18th century, during the reign of Charles III (of the Bourbons) to protect the coast from attacks by Barbary corsairs, which were very common at the time.
Its main goal was to monitor the coastline and protect the local population and their goods against Pirate incursions, especially in periods when maritime trade was gaining importance.
A brief history of the Castillo de Moraira
Although the current castle dates from the second half of the 18th century, it is known that defensive constructions already existed in the area in the 16th century. However, after a devastating pirate attack in 1744, the creation of a more solid and modern fortress was promoted.
The design was entrusted to engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, and its construction was carried out with cut-stone, partly sourced from the quarry on the coast itself. This choice gives it a solid appearance and a resistant structure that has withstood centuries of marine and weathering assaults.
Over the years, the castle lost its military function and was abandoned until it was restored and declared a Cultural Heritage Site. Today, it stands as an exceptional example of military architecture in the Marina Alta.
Can the interior be visited?
Yes, it can be visited, although it is not a fortress with open chambers like a medieval castle. The interior of the Castillo de Moraira has been adapted as an exhibition and interpretive space. During the summer months and holidays, it opens to the public to display panels about its history, construction techniques, and the historical context of the 18th century.
It also features an audiovisual projection in various languages about the history of the fortress. We recommend checking the Teulada Moraira tourism page about the castle for opening hours and contact phone numbers so you can reach out if you have any questions.
It’s worth noting that the surrounding area of the castle is open year-round, so you can walk around, enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean, and take pictures in one of Moraira’s most picturesque spots.
Two more curiosities about the surroundings of this defensive stronghold are the archaeological remains of the water tanks, from where the fortress’s guards obtained water, and a small chapel housing an image of the Virgin of the Forsaken.
