The Route of the Jalón Wellss
The Pous de Jalón Route
The Marina Alta has harbored, since ancient times, a rich variety of villages and cultures. Many of them have left an invaluable historical legacy that allows us to glimpse how the inhabitants of these lands lived centuries ago. One such example is found just 20 kilometers from the azure waters of the tourist town of Jalón.
A small municipality that has made tourism and nature its way of life. And with a cultural heritage worth exploring. In addition to its rich wineries and its ancestral Mediterranean cuisine, this town in Alicante has become an ideal location to rent a house in Jalón and enjoy countless natural advantages.
The route of Pous de Jalón
One of the most surprising attractions for tourists is the route dels Pous de Jalón. This name refers to a tourist itinerary that links the four communal wells of Fuente, which supplied Jalón before the installation of potable water in the 1960s.
Rubèn Vidal and Bertomeu, archaeologist from Xaló (its Valencian name), consider that this network of source wells is part of a highly significant hydraulic complex from a historical, architectural, ethnological, and symbolic point of view. Its cultural heritage importance has been undeniable, and its preservation is essential for promoting Jalón’s historical legacy.
The four wells are strategically located at the outskirts of the town: the Higueras Well in the east; l'Assegador in the south; the Basseta in the southwest; and the Camino de Passula to the west. On the north side of the village, there was no well because it was protected by the so-called Acequia madre or mayor, the landmark that organized the Jalón orchards, providing water for domestic, agricultural, and even industrial uses to operate the village mill.
The oldest well is the Higueras, documented as early as the 17th century. The Department of Culture, through the Toponymy Working Group, has created records of these rich heritage elements. They are currently included in the Catalog of Protected Assets and Spaces of the Municipality of Xaló, classified as a Asset of Local Relevance. Undoubtedly, another reason to rent a house in Jalón and explore fascinating historical sites.
