Church of Saint Michael the Archangel Orthodox

The first Orthodox Church in Spain, a hidden treasure in Altea Hills.

If you have a car, don’t hesitate: the Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Altea Hills (Calle Noray, nº1) is a must-see stop, whether the day is sunny or rainy. This wooden temple, designed in the traditional Russian style, not only catches the eye with its façade and five golden domes, but also exudes charm both outside and inside. From the road, it already makes an impression standing atop the hill, with the sea and the mountains in the background, but it’s when you approach that you truly appreciate all the details of its architecture.

History and Unique Features

The church is the first Russian Orthodox temple built in all of Spain. The first stone was laid on November 21, 2002, and its official consecration took place on November 11, 2007 by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow. The most distinctive feature is that all the materials and artisans came directly from Russia, especially from the Ural Mountains. There is only one curious exception: the bells, which were cast in Valladolid. This attention to detail gives the church an authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere on the peninsula.

What it’s like inside and what to see around

The interior surprises with a richly decorated iconostasis, frescoes on the walls, and a painted dome following Russian Orthodox traditions. Everything conveys a solemn yet welcoming atmosphere, inviting visitors to pause for a moment and admire the craftsmanship. Surrounding the church, well-maintained gardens and a statue of Saint Nicholas complete the scene, offering a peaceful space for strolling or simply sitting to enjoy the views of Altea Hills.

Additionally, its location is perfect for combining with other plans: it is very close to Mascarat Beach and the roads connecting to the center of Altea, making it easy to include this visit in a broader tour of the area.

A Unique Jewel on the Costa Blanca

The Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is undoubtedly one of those places that surprise with their unexpected charm. Its architecture, recent history, and distinctive character make it a point of interest that stands out from the usual. If you’re looking for something different, off the beaten tourist path, here you will find a one-of-a-kind corner in Spain.

Undoubtedly, a different and lesser-known visit for tourists, but one you shouldn’t miss.
