Christmas and New Year's Eve Plans on the Costa Blanca
The Costa Blanca is a perfect area to enjoy tourism, both on hot summer days and on mild winter days. While it is true that you need to bundle up a little, in December the temperatures are much more pleasant than in the rest of Spain. For this reason, strolling through the streets of Calpe at Christmas and other nearby towns such as Altea or Benidorm is very appealing, even outside the summer season.
Here are some of the things you can do during these days.
What to do in Benissa at Christmas?
This special and unique year, Benissa invites us to experience a Slow Christmas. Stroll through its streets enjoying the smell of fireplaces, savor the typical dishes of this time of year, shop in local stores. Enjoy outdoor concerts and visits to nativity scenes, explore the surroundings on a bike...
Additionally, in 2020, they have prepared a special program with baking and decoration workshops, guided tours, concerts... And of course, the Three Wise Men parade, with maximum safety measures in place. You can check the Christmas schedule for Benissa 2020 at this link.
What to do in Calpe at Christmas?
Being in Calpe at Christmas allows you to enjoy different activities from those sought during the summer. Besides clear days and more pleasant temperatures than other parts of the peninsula, some activities specific to these dates take place, such as the Calpe Christmas market.
The Christmas market, located every year in the old town, is one of the main attractions of Christmas in Calpe. For several years now, this medieval-style market has been set up in this privileged area of the town, not only due to its location but also because of the beauty of its streets. It’s one of the must-do activities in Calpe that you shouldn’t miss during this season!

The Calpe Christmas Fair lasts about four days. Usually, the stalls are set up in the second week of December. Many people take the opportunity to buy handmade products and gifts during these days. There are also kiosks selling foods such as homemade bread, sausages, liqueurs, pickles, herbal infusions...
Many choose to visit Calpe at Christmas to spend the last days of the year in a beach area. Most restaurants prepare delicious menus full of local foods, including fish, seafood, and Mediterranean garden products.
After dinner, the streets are filled with the noise and smell of fireworks. Some decide to spend the entire New Year’s Eve in Calpe and listen to the bells in the old town or right on the beach. Others, however, prefer to go to the nightlife areas of Benidorm.
However, if you are looking for something more peaceful, you can plan other types of activities. For example, visiting the Baños de la Reina, the Algar springs, the Guadalest castle, or hiking with family, whether on foot or by bike. There are also many activities to do in Calpe with children.
What to do in Altea at Christmas?
Another option for a winter getaway is to visit Altea at Christmas. During winter, the streets of the old town take on a special beauty. This area is beautiful during the day, but even more so at sunset. Enjoying the sunset views from above and then strolling through its alleyways at nightfall is an experience you must live.

During this season, the area is filled with lights and decorated stores for the festivities. If you spend a few days in the town, maybe renting a villa in Altea, you cannot miss trying its typical dishes, including rice dishes and others cooked in pots, such as stews or fish calderetas.
Of course, Altea also has its traditional Christmas market, where you will find all kinds of local products. Unlike usual markets, this one is filled with activities and the characteristic smells of these dates.
But there are many other activities you can do before and after Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Altea, like hiking. If you love nature, the winter climate is perfect for walking along the cliffs of the Sierra Helada natural park or exploring the Water Route. You can also go sightseeing in some nearby towns.
What to do in the Costa Blanca at Christmas?
The Costa Blanca has much to offer tourists during the coldest time of the year. Besides its unique and delicious cuisine, there are some things that can only be enjoyed during these dates. One of the most striking may be the Jijona Turrón Fair, which we will tell you about below.
The most well-known and international of Christmas nougats has its own fair in Jijona, coinciding with the Constitution Day holiday. The town center is filled with stalls offering all kinds of turrons. Most are made following traditional methods, with natural ingredients and the ancient recipes passed down through generations. But it’s not just about turron; there is also a wide variety of typical sweets for this season.
