Old Town of Calpe

The picturesque Old Town of Calpe is full of history. In the past, Ottoman pirate attacks often took place in the area of La Marina, so the municipalities moved away from the coast and defended themselves with walls. Even today you can still see the remains of the wall that runs through Calpe.

To explore the centre of Calpe, we recommend starting at Forat de la Mar and continuing on to the old suburbs. The Forat de la Mar is located in the Plaza de la Constitución. This is what remains of the wall that once surrounded Calpe. It was largely destroyed in 1813, after an attack by French forces attempting to conquer and assault the territory. From here, you can head towards the Torreó de la Peça and the Calle Punchal, which is known for its stairs painted in Spanish colours. Afterwards, you can continue along the old Town Hall and the Calle Mayor with its shops. On this route, you will come across mosaics and murals depicting scenes and traditions of Calpe.

As for museums, our favourites are the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Collecting. The Archaeological Museum is located on Calle Santísimo Cristo and is better known as Casa de la Senyoreta. There are very old pieces dating back to the Bronze Age, as well as newer pieces. For its part, the Museum of Collecting is located in the Torreó de la Peça and exhibits public and private works in its 50 square metres. In both museums we recommend that you check the opening hours beforehand, as they are not the same in summer and winter.

If you want to appreciate a different architectural style, you can visit the Hermitage of San Salvador, which is a unique recreation of the Gothic style. It dates back to the 17th century but has had to be rebuilt several times over the years.

To end your visit, we recommend a stroll along Gabriel Miró street. This route will take you to one of the most touristy areas of the city. It is also home to a series of restaurants that are worth a visit for all gastronomy lovers. And if you visit Calpe in summer? Don't forget to spend the night here. In summer, the restaurants take their tables outside. In addition, in the evenings there are numerous traditional and artisan markets and Calpe's history can be found in just a few streets!
